Technoscientific Tests and the Future of Athletic Competition
Over the last several decades, sport has become increasingly defined by tests. Sport governing bodies have used technoscientific instruments to determine what types of bodies may or may not compete. These tests serve the additional purpose of maintaining the illusion that elite sport is still about competitions between equally matched bodies. Testing’s strength resides equally in the societal collective belief that science reveals truth and the public's desire to consume heroic athletic triumphs. But in this historical moment, can testing in fact support the weight of athletic hopes, dreams, and desires?
