Myron Gutmann was trained in the fields of early modern western Europe and historical demography, and has published extensively in European social, economic, and demographic history. Since the 1990s he has devoted an increasing proportion of his time to research on the demographic, social, and environmental history of the western United States. Gutmann's current research projects are a study of the relationships between population, land use, and environment, in the U.S. Great Plains in the 20th Century, and a study of the history of family relationships in the Hispanic population of the U.S.
