Major Projects:
- Fulbright Fellowship to the University of Kinshasa, Congo-Kinshasa (2007).
- Extensive anthropological and historical research in Congo-Kinshasa continues with research on the history of Congolese comic production and reception since the 1930s.
- Tales of the City: Gender, Health, and Knowledge in Accra (in preparation). Co-edited volume of ethnographic stories and essays authored by students of the University of Ghana and the University of Michigan. Co-editors: Takyiwaa Manuh and Edith Tetteh.
- A Colonial Lexicon of Birth Ritual, Medicalization, and Mobility in the Congo (1999). (Received the Melville J. Herskovits Book Award for the Best Scholarly Book in African Studies, 2000.)
- Nervous State: Violence, Sterility, and Healing Movements in Colonial Congo, monograph, solicited by Duke University Press, in final preparation.
- Director, the “Women’s Health in the City of Accra” Project, a transnational qualitative health research training program for 14 University of Ghana and 8 University of Michigan students in the human sciences and medicine, sited at the University of Ghana, 1999-2001. Resulted in two 28-minute documentary films: “’Excuse Me to Say. . .’: Notions of Body and Risk in Accra,” and “’If All Else Fails . . .’: Tonics, Clinics, and Miracles in Accra.”
- Co-founder of UM’s African History Group, an on-going workshop for graduate students in history, anthropology, and allied disciplines.
