DeVries-Van der Kooy Memorial Lecture
Jan Willem Duyvendak is full professor of Sociology at the University of Amsterdam Institute for Social Science Research (AISSR). Before Professor Duyvendak joined the UvA faculty, he was Director of the Verwey-Jonker Research Institute for Social Issues (1999-2003) and Professor of Community Development at the Erasmus University of Rotterdam (1996-2002). He currently holds an invited position as Distinguished Visiting Fellow at the City University of New York (CUNY) Graduate Center. Duyvendak studied Sociology in Groningen and Paris and wrote his dissertation on social movements in France. His current research on "belonging", "feeling at home", urban sociology, and nativism has resulted in, among others, the books The Politics of Home: nostalgia and belonging in Western Europe and the United States (Palgrave Macmillan 2011) and Crafting Citizenship: negotiating tensions in modern society (Palgrave Macmillan 2012).
