Sangjoon Lee received his PhD degree from the Department of Cinema Studies at New York University in May 2011. His dissertation “The Transnational Asian Studio System: Cinema, Nation-State, and Globalization in Cold War Asia” received The Jay Leyda Award for Academic Excellence from NYU. Lee's book project, The Asian Film Festival and the Emergence of Transnational Film Network in Cold War Asia (1953-1972) will trace the early history of the festival and explore the ways in which cold war politics, ideology, international relations, and nationalism have shaped this regional film festival in postwar Asia. Prior to his graduate studies in America, Lee worked for film and TV productions in South Korea as a screenwriter, director, and assistant producer. Articles on the Asian Film Festival, Hong Kong-UK coproduction horror films, Korean martial arts films and literatures in the 1960s, and contemporary Pan-Asian epic cinemas are forthcoming in various anthologies and journals including Oxford Handbook of Japanese Cinema, Coming Soon to a Film Festival Near You, East Asian Cinema and Cultural Heritage, and Transnational Cinemas.
