Umer was born and grew up around Burlington, Vermont. After high school he attended Deep Springs College, a two-year school; there he had the good fortune to be introduced to Philosophy and Classics. He duly double majored in the two subjects when he completed his Bachelor's Degree at the University of Vermont.
