These snails are of unexpected importance in the development of modern biological sciences and the history of the snails will be outlined, from the first collection by Captain Cook in 1769 to the study of genetics in the 20th century. Most Partula are now extinct in the wild and the role of science in the efforts to save the remaining species will be highlighted.
