Major Projects:
- Considerable research over the past 40 years on the evolution and speciation of brood-parasitic birds (cuckoos and finches) in a number of African countries. Specifically, Payne records songs of birds that are reared by other species and studies their breeding biology (NSF, NGS).
- Songs and behavior of the unique Madagascar cuckoos, the couas (Fall 2007).
