My research focuses on eighteenth century Jamaica: a vital node in the First British Empire. Specifically, I examine how women participated in colonization and the expansion of slavery in the Atlantic World. I study the ways in which the plantation system redefined customary gender roles and family organization. I am also interested in how people negotiated the boundaries between enslavement and freedom on a daily basis.
