"Story of Floating Weeds" ~ CJS Fall Films Series 2012
Story of Floating Weeds features an elegantly simple plot wherein an aging actor returns to a small town with his troupe and reunites with his former lover and illegitimate son, a scenario that enrages his current mistress and results in heartbreak for all. One of Ozu’s most popular films, he issued a remake in 1959 toward the end of his career. There are few major differences between the 1934 and 1959 versions, and both are consequently faithful to the plot of the American film that is said to have inspired the original script. This was The Barker, a 1928 George Fitzmaurice picture about a traveling carnival which had proved popular in Japan.
