Description:
Directed by Leo Mittler. Written by Willy Döll and Jan Fethke. With Lissy Arna, Paul Rehkopf and Fritz Genschow.
A beggar, a prostitute and an unemployed man get caught up in a lethal conflict over a pearl necklace in this recently restored masterpiece of proletarian cinema. Director Leo Mittler, himself a former actor, draws stunning performances from his leads in order to create convincing portraits of individuals forced to live in the most sordid parts of the city. These performances, combined with Friedl Behn-Grund’s camerawork and Soviet-inspired montage sequences that capture the rhythms of the city street, lend the film a moody, dreadful atmosphere worthy of the subject matter.
