Material Computation: Architectural Research in Complex Fibrous Structures
Fibrous materials, such as textiles and composites, enable architectural structures to be incredibly efficient, lightweight and robust. This is accomplished by utilizing these materials as surfaces of both structure and enclosure. This makes for a complex proposition, though, for designing such systems: the relationship between structural performance and architectural form is inextricable. The capacity for design is defined by the ability to develop, access and simultaneously employ knowledge and techniques across fields of civil engineering, architectural design and computer science. This talk will present research in developing methods of design to drive innovations in textile and composites structures. This will include topics in simulation of material behavior, and material studies utilizing advanced textile manufacturing technologies.
