  • Location: Kelsey Museum of Archaeology, 434 S. State St., Ann Arbor

  • Description:

This exhibition is designed to be an enjoyable, experiential opportunity to learn about conservation in museums and on archaeological sites. Topical areas within the exhibition focus on the field of conservation, the deterioration of objects and archaeological sites, the work of conservators, and the importance of preserving material culture. Visitors will have the opportunity to participate in common conservation activities, interact with conservators, and formulate their own thoughts on the motivations for conservation work.

Both in the gallery and online the show will include an object examination activity and a wall where visitors will post their answers to the question, “what is the value of preserving artifacts and sites from the past?” Opportunities for interaction with conservators will also be provided in the gallery, where a conservator will work at a lab bench. A blog will allow readers to comment and ask questions. In a series of podcasts available online and in the galleries conservators will tell stories about projects in which they have participated.
