UM Students Lend a Helping Hand
In spring of 2012, RLL lecturers Mar Freire Hermida and Andy Noverr took a group of 16 students to work in a Santiago de Compostela, Spain soup kitchen and its adjacent day center. Over the course of a month, the students volunteered at both locations as they worked with the homeless and economically disadvantaged populations of the city.
The program also planned short trips and site visits which allowed students to explore the connections between food and culture as they considered the social influences on food production, sustainability, marketing and consumption.
William Schofield, double concentrator in Spanish and Screen Arts and Cultures (SAC), chronicled his experience in a presentation video he created and posted on YouTube. The presentation is part of a larger documentary project William is working on for SAC.
