LSAIT Monthly Status Report - March 2013
Below is this month's status report for significant projects which LSAIT is leading or participating in, as well as reminders of services available via LSA IT. Feedback and questions are always welcome.
1PB of data storage - Up to two terabytes of secure, replicated storage is being made available to each faculty member without cost to the faculty member or department. The faculty member or department can purchase additional storage. To enable us to best serve all faculty, we are gradually making this service available over the next two months on a unit-by-unit basis. The availability schedule is at the end of this email. We will send further detail to each unit as the service becomes available. Phil Bonam joins LSA IT lead team - We are continually looking for opportunities to increase communication and collaboration within LSA IT as well as to prepare for MiWorkspace and the associated transition of desktop support staff. In support of these ends, we are flattening the LSA IT organization structure, transitioning Phil Bonam (desktop support supervisor) to now be a member of the LSA IT lead team, reporting directly to me. Organizationally, this will now make Greg Beyer and Phil Bonam peers in leading CSG. As we continue to redefine and reshape LSA IT, this change will help ensure we are working effectively in serving the IT needs of LSA (Contact: David Sweetman).
Systems Administrator new hire - We are currently in the process of interviewing for a new member of the LSA IT infrastructure team. During the last year, the LSA IT lost 4 experienced infrastructure system administrators. We have been able to restructure, rationalize, transition, and otherwise gain efficiencies in deliveries of associated services such that these positions are only being replaced by this one new position. We hope to announce the new hire in next month’s update (Contact: Marissa Green).
Upcoming Campus-wide Michigan IT Town Hall Meetings – All members of the UM community are invited to hear the latest about Michigan IT during a campus-wide town hall event scheduled for this Monday, March 18, 9-noon, in the Michigan League Ballroom. Additionally, all IT professionals recently received invitations to University-wide IT Town Halls that will provide greater discussion opportunity for IT staff regarding Michigan IT. As described in previous updates, efforts continue to articulate the details of what MiWorkspace will mean to LSA and other academic units. MiWorkspace is part of broader University-wide IT Rationalization efforts to build a more cohesive community of IT professionals across the University – called Michigan IT – that is aligned to effectively providing both local and University-wide IT needs (Contacts: David Sweetman).
IT in LSA implementing cohesive service management - IT leadership from across LSA continues collaboration to ensure alignment of our efforts to the missions of the College and to provide excellent service in the process. In collaboration with ITS, we are partnering in the implementation of a common platform for incident/ticket tracking, knowledge management, service catalog, and more. We are developing implementation plans for the coming months. This will enable a greater degree of seamlessness in IT support across the many IT professional who serve the College’s IT needs (Contact: Erin Dietrich, Reid Paxton, David Sweetman).
East Hall Server Room Consolidation and new south CSG office - Last weekend, during our LSA IT maintenance weekend, we decommissioned an East Hall server room (our first server room in our consolidation project). Special thanks to the many people who were in some way part of this successful, collaborative effort: Tim Ahlgren, Crystal Borgman, Chris Brenner, Marissa Green, David Hunt, Mark Montague, April Nance, Karen Pachla, Bob Pelcher, Jesse Reets, David Rhey, Tom Scherer, Josh Simon, John Torgersen, Karen Wilson, Robert Woolson, and others. We are converting the the room into office space for a Computer Support Group (CSG) office that can better serve LSA locations along South University. We continue migrating servers to the ITS cloud server offering, MiServer, to reduce our physical server footprint (Contact: Marissa Green, Greg Beyer).
Mason Hall wireless network upgrade complete – A significant upgrade to the Mason Hall wireless network occurred during Winter Recess. We hope you notice the improvements to the wireless infrastructure in the Angel Complex! Let us know if you continue to see wifi issues (Contact: Marissa Green).
LSA IT Website Redesign - LSA IT has a newly redesigned website. Our initial focus has been removing outdated information and properly representing new team structures and services. We will continue to evolve and expand the website over the coming months. Our goal is to provide a useful resource for students, faculty, and staff in LSA looking for information about IT services and support (Contact: Erin Dietrich, Marissa Green, Greg Beyer).
IT Advocacy Pilot - Work continues in defining the IT Advocacy role as a way to more effectively partner with departments, understand needs, and navigate the UM IT ecosystem to best provide for those needs. We are starting with a subset of departments and expanding the offering throughout 2013. By adding departments incrementally, we have the opportunity to collect data, gain valuable insights, and ensure appropriate staffing levels to scale the service College-wide. Additionally, this approach will allow the most flexibility in shaping the Advocacy role. Services will be driven by and adapted based on feedback and data from participating departments. Tech tip emails - In January, we started twice-monthly tech tips emails. Each email contains 5 quick and simple tips designed to help you more fully leverage our IT environment.
