Based on Karl Ziak’s story “Picard wider Balmart,” Der ewige Traum (sometimes referred to as Der König vom Mont-Blanc) is the story of French mountaineer, Jacques Balmart’s quest to climb Mont Blanc in search of gold in 1786. Director Arnold Fanck is known as the father of the Mountain film — a genre popular in the 1920s and 30s, which typically featured spectacular on-location photography of dangerous climbs as brave heroes and heroines conquered Germany’s (or in this case, France’s) lone frontiers.
