Health and Biomedical Engineering for Girls- summer program

What is it? UM Health & Biomedical Engineering for Girls Camp is an exciting four-day, day program for students who will complete the 9th-11th grades in June 18 - 22, 2012.

UM Health & Biomedical Engineering for Girls Camp will include hands-on projects that connect the health sciences with biomedical engineering. will include hands-on projects that connect the health sciences with biomedical engineering. The camp will include dissection, circuit building, public health labs, campus tours, student and professional panels and many other activities.

In addition to hands-on activities, students will meet women scientists and engineers and other students, like themselves, with interests in science, math and engineering. Campers will have lots of fun exploring the University of Michigan campus in Ann Arbor.


HBME is sponsored by the University of Michigan, Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) Program, Skyline High School's Health Science Magnet in cooperation with the UM College of Engineering and College of Literature, Science and the Arts.

When and where is it?
UM Health & Biomedical Engineering Camp will be held on the University of Michigan campus in Ann Arbor. One session will be offered:
Tuesday - Friday, June 18 - 21, 2012, 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM

Instructional settings include the College of Literature, Sciences and the Arts, the College of Engineering, the Medical School and labs located around the campus.

Who is eligible to apply?

You are eligible to apply for UM Health & Biomedical Engineering Camp if:

  • You will complete grades 9, 10, 11 or 12 in June 2012
  • You have an interest in science, programming, mathematics, or engineering
  • You send us a *complete* application, including a letter of recommendation, postmarked no later than April 13, 2012.

What is the cost?
UM Health & Biomedical Engineering for Girls Camp costs $325 for a four-day session. This tuition includes four full days of program activities from 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM. Students should plan to bring a bag lunch every day. All instructional costs, supplies, and equipment are included.

A limited number of partial scholarships are available to students who are eligible for the program and who can document need. To apply for scholarship support, please complete the attached scholarship request form and return it with your application.

Optional early drop-off and late pick-up is available for an additional fee.

How do I apply?

Complete the entire student application form. Give the recommendation form to the person you have chosen to recommend you. Remember that your recommendation must be from a math or science teacher. We will not consider an application until it is complete, including a letter of recommendation. Return your completed application not later than by April 13, 2012.

Applications will be reviewed as accepted. All applicants will receive a letter to let them know if they have been accepted. DO NOT send money with your application. Accepted students will be asked to send a non-refundable, space-reserving deposit of $150 by May 10, 2012 with a balance of $175 due by June 7, 2012.
