RobotC for Girls - summer program

What is it?

RobotC for Girls is a one-week, day program for students who will complete grades 8-12 in June 2012.

The camp introduces students to computer programming in a fun and supportive environment. RobotC for Girls campers will program Lego Mindstorm robots using RobotC programming language. This is the language that many high school FIRST Robotics Competition teams use. UM's Engineering 101, a required course for engineering students, uses C++ which is quite similar to C. The number of campers is limited to 20.

The camp is planned and taught by University of Michigan faculty, staff and students. In addition to hands-on activities, campers will participate in fun group competitions, will tour dynamic UM labs, Google, and the UM campus and will talk with UM students in science and engineering majors.

Our campers are chaperoned by WISE camp staff at all times.

RobotC for Girls is sponsored by the University of Michigan, Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) Program and by Google.

When and where is it?
RobotC will be held on the University of Michigan campus in Ann Arbor.
Monday-Friday, June 23 - 29, 2012  8:30 AM–4:30 PM
Students attending the program will meet each morning at UMs WISE Program Office in 1140 Undergraduate Science Building.

Who is eligible to apply?
You are eligible to apply for RobotC if:

  • You will complete grades 8, 9, 10, 11 or 12 in June 2012
  • You have an interest in science, programming, mathematics, or engineering
  • You send us a *complete* application, including a letter of recommendation, postmarked no later than April 13, 2012


RobotC: No previous experience in robotics or programming is necessary.

What is the cost?
RobotC costs $250 for a five-day session. This tuition includes five full days of program activities from 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM. Lunch is not provided. Students should bring a bag lunch every day. All instructional costs, supplies, and equipment are included.
A limited number of partial scholarships are available to students who are eligible for the program and who can document need. To apply for scholarship support, please complete the attached scholarship request form and return it with your application.
Optional early drop-off and late pick-up is available for an additional fee.

How do I apply?
Complete the entire student application form. Give the recommendation form to the person you have chosen to recommend you. Remember that your recommendation must be from a math or science teacher. We will not consider an application until it is complete, including a letter of recommendation. Return your completed application no later than by Aprll 13, 2012.
All applicants will receive a letter by May 1 to let them know if they have been accepted. DO NOT send money with your application. Accepted students will be asked to send a non-refundable, space-reserving deposit of $125.00 by May 10, 2012 with a balance of $125 due by June 7, 2012.

Please Note: Partial scholarships are limited and may not be available to all students who request them. Many community organizations are willing to help fund the costs of student participation in summer learning programs. If you need assistance with the cost of the program, please check with groups in your area. Examples include: Zonta, Rotary Clubs, Church/religious groups, Girl Scouts, and schools. Teachers may have additional suggestions.
