Ashley Anderson As a freshman entering a large university, it's not uncommon to feel overwhelmed by the competitiveness and size of the school. Being part of the WISE RP made the transition to the university much easier. The close-knit community allowed me to form friendships easily and feel comfortable in such a large school. The community was also very supportive and provided great resources, such as study groups, that helped me adjust to the rigors of college coursework. In addition, the WISE RP introduced me to many women in a science or engineering career, which allowed me to see how many women have been successful in male-dominated professions. Overall, I believe that the WISE RP is a major reason why I had such a successful year as a freshman at the University of Michigan. |

Marypat Beaufait Peer Mentor, Electrical Engineering Major The WISE RP was extremely beneficial in helping me with the transition to university life. Since I am from out-of-state, I was not able to go home until Thanksgiving break, but the close relationships that I formed with students at UM, especially those in the WISE RP, made any homesickness that I felt much more bearable. The study groups offered through WISE RP were very important to my academic success during my first year at UM. The study group leaders were always open to my questions, whether I asked them during the study group time in the classroom, by email, or by knocking on their doors. Also, there always seemed to be some WISE RP event going on somewhere in Mosher-Jordan. I'm excited to return to the WISE RP next year! |

Chelsea Holland Peer Mentor, Engineering Major WISE RP really made my first year at U of M more personalized. Being a part of something small and unique at such a large university helps you find your place as soon as you get to Ann Arbor. WISE RP also helped me meet many students who have similar interests and goals. I really enjoy the close-knit feel of the WISE RP. |

Siedah Garrison Program Board, Biochemistry Major WISE RP made my first year very memorable. There is always someone there and support everywhere. The program made the university feel smaller. |

Annaliese McGavin Peer Mentor, Majoring in Brain, Behavior, and Cognitive Science & Spanish Coming to college, I figured that I would have no hassles adjusting; high school went very smoothly for me and despite the warnings of my parents and high school teachers, I seemed to think university would be the same bump-free experience. Well, note to self: college is NOT the same as high school! Thankfully, as a member of WISE RP I was able to avoid stumbling off the cliff of insanity and have a great first year. While, my idea of a "smooth college ride" was not self-fulfilling, WISE RP played an enormous role in guiding me through a potentially 'not-so-hot' college transition and helped me ease into university life much more smoothly. I owe much of the success of my first year to the army of resources I was equipped with as a member of WISE RP. The great community, study groups, and ample opportunities for explorations and learning definitely came in handy throughout the year. Because of the immense impact WISE RP had on my first year at the university, I am coming back as a peer mentor to provide as much of a comforting community to incoming first year students as I experienced during my first year at the university. |

Louisa Millott Program Board, Engineering Major The WISE RP changed my first-year experience in so many great ways. I was able to meet many diverse friends who shared my interests and academic goals before my classes even started, participate in cultural activities and programs within the community and outside of it as well, and I had opportunities to network and get to know professors in fields I was interested in. And without the WISE RP, I wouldn't have met some of my best friends! |

Caroline Morel The WISE RP was a great way for me to make the transition from a small high school (150 students) to a large university. Having a peer mentor was quite beneficial; I got a letter from her before school even started and she helped me figure out the bus system and how to buy books once we got to campus. The girls in the WISE RP are awesome--though having the same academic interests helps, it's pretty amazing how well 150 girls who barely know each other can form a great community! The WISE RP community is supportive, positive, and collaborative--a great way to kick off my career at U of M.

Kelly Whelan Peer Mentor, Majoring in Biology I really enjoyed being in WISE RP my first year at college because I knew that I was already part of a group of people who I could relate to. If I had a question about something I learned in class, it was as easy as walking next door to get an answer. I feel the greatest benefit from being in WISE RP is getting to know the people in your community through events and seeing each other on the same floor. The WISE RP makes the university seem much smaller. I felt the transition from high school to UM was much easier being a part of the WISE RP. I did not only feel like a student of UM but I also felt like a part of the community because and I had more of a role. I cannot wait for next year and to see the people I met from last year! |
