Organizations & Activities
Women’s Studies Graduate Student
Association—The Women’s Studies
Graduate Student Association is the official graduate student group
for students in the joint doctoral programs or certificate programs
of Women’s Studies. The Association provides an intellectual
community to develop professional interests, addresses departmental
and university concerns affecting students, sponsors events, and
fosters collegial peer relations. Questions? Please email wsgradassoc@umich.edu.
Graduate Employees Organization (GEO)—GEO
is Local 3550 of the American Federation of Teachers (AFT)/ Michigan Federation
of Teachers and School-Related Personnel (MFT&SRP), American Federation
of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL–CIO) We are also
affiliated with AGEL (grad employees within the AFT) and CGEU (all grad employees).
GEO is an activist, democratic and volunteer-run organization where graduate
employees come together to improve the wages and working conditions for themselves
and for those to follow.
Rackham Graduate Student Forum—established by Rackham in 1989 as part
of an effort to improve communication with and among Rackham students across
all disciplines. Topics of discussion have included: climate for graduate education
on campus, student governance, funding, bus transportation and other topics
the participants themselves have initiated. Rackham has taken action or made
changes directly in response to suggestions made during the Forum. Women’s
Studies has one representative on the Forum each year. The 2009–2010 Women’s
Studies Representative is Kara French.
LambdaGrads—organization
for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer graduate and professional
students at the University of Michigan. LambdaGrads provides a safe, fun and
open environment for queer grad students to socialize and build community across
academic disciplines. We are primarily a social organization, but we work hard
to build connections with other queer grad student-serving organizations, including
Open for Business (B-School), BGLAM (Med School), OUTLaws (Law School) , OUTBreak
(Public Health), the Rainbow Network (Social Work), LILA (School of Info/Lib
Sciences), the Stonewall Dems, and the Wolverine Commission for Human Rights.
Updates on events and meetings are planned via lively, entertaining e-mail
discourse. To join us, help us and hang out with us, email
us.
Michigan Feminist Studies Journal—an
interdisciplinary journal published annually. The journal is edited and produced
by Michigan graduate students committed to interdisciplinary dialogue and critical
exchange. MFS has been publishing feminist scholarship since 1978, when it
began under the title Occasional Papers in Women’s Studies.
In 1989, the journal began annual publication under the name Michigan Feminist
Studies. It is the oldest graduate student-run journal in the country,
as well as the oldest journal emerging from the University of Michigan. The
primary mission of MFS is to bring original and thought-provoking scholarship
in gender studies to a national audience. The journal is committed to exploring
the connections between class, race, ethnicity, sexuality, and gender.
Maize Pages—Maize Pages is
the University of Michigan’s online directory of student organizations.
