Carol Jacobsen is Professor of Art and nonbudgeted faculty in Women's Studies, American Culture, and was the 2005-06 Human Rights Fellow at The University of Michigan. Her social documentary work in video and photography focuses on issues of women's criminalization and censorship and is co-sponsored by Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch and other nonprofit organizations. Her films and photography have been shown throughout the U.S. and abroad, and is represented by Denise Bibro Gallery in New York. Her critical essays have been published in Signs, Hastings Women's Law Journal, New York Law Review, Social Text, Art in America and other publications. She serves as Director of the Michigan Women's Justice & Clemency Project, advocating for human rights of women prisoners and freedom for women wrongly convicted. The Project has successfully freed 8 women from life sentences, assisted dozens more with paroles, and protested ongoing human rights violations.
