Undergraduate Courses in Anthropology

Independent Study

An independent study may be conducted for 1-3 credits in a given term in any subfield of anthropology on any subject agreed upon between the student and the faculty member. The independent study courses in anthropology are: ANTHRARC 499 in anthropological archaeology, ANTHRBIO 370 in biological anthropology, and ANTHRCUL 499 in sociocultural or linguistic anthropology. The independent study application must be completed by students and their supervising faculty member. Applications are submitted to AnthroIndiStudy@umich.edu and must be approved by the Director of Undergraduate Studies before students are permitted to enroll. Applications must include a description of the work to be done in the course. The amount of reading and writing that will be performed, how often meetings will take place with the supervising faculty member, and how the final grade will be assessed should be specified in the application. Students will be graded on an A-E basis. A maximum of 6 credits of independent study can be counted toward the major in Anthropology or Evolutionary Anthropology.
