There is no better genre in which to explore the relationship between text and images, or stories and pictures, than children’s literature, which embraces rather than apologizes for its use of images to heighten our experience of words. This class will examine different subgenres: storybooks, fairy tales, children’s poetry (including Blake’s Songs of Innocence and Experience), and young adult fiction, and will include film adaptations (The Wizard of Oz, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory). We will also read several versions of Beauty and the Beast, and attend the Ann Arbor production (for which LHSP art students are designing the set). As students develop skills to critique the literature and to create their own, they will also challenge the assumptions we make when we label a piece of writing or artwork “children’s.” For the culminating assignment, each student will write and illustrate his or her own children’s book.

This course is open to any students who have taken LHSP 125.
