Primary Instructor:

UARTS 250: Creative Process-France is an interdisciplinary, immersive studio course supplemented with lectures, discussions, and readings. Students from across campus will work together exploring creative problem solving through hands-on activities led by faculty from the School of Art & Design; the School of Music, Theatre & Dance; the Taubman College of Architecture + Urban Planning; and the College of Engineering. Develop your own creativity as you visualize imaginative concepts, create original sound and movement work, define innovative spatial constructs, and invent computerized mechanics. Live in the Medieval French Abbey of Pontlevoy. Explore the region on field trips and by yourself. Pontlevoy is located in the Loire Valley, a region rich in chateaux; 2 1/2 hours from Paris; 1 hour from Tours.


  • Depart for Paris, France: Saturday-Sunday, May 16-17
  • Welcome barbeque in the Abbey gardens: Sunday, May 17
  • Instruction: Monday, May 18 – Friday, June 12
  • Weekly field trips
  • Return from Paris: Saturday, June 13 (or option to return later)


  • Program fee: $2,000 covers lodging, use of studio facilities, and breakfast daily
  • Deposit: $500 deposit required to secure reservation.
  • Tuition: 4 credits
  • Airfare: ~$750 - $1,200
  • Out of pocket expenses: ~$1,000
  • Mandatory international health insurance: $29 ($1/day)


  • Good academic standing - students on probation not eligible
  • Passport required
  • French language not required
  • UM International Travel Registry required (no charge)
  • There is a restaurant across the street from the Abbey that offers daily low cost student specials, and students will have a full kitchen to store and prepare their own food. A grocery store is within walking distance.
