We read bodies all day long - a slouch means disinterest or discomfort, variants of a smile in your direction denote levels of joy or familiarity, a lean into a street demonstrates a plan to cross it. Art that uses the body is a potent force for discussing and questioning the multiple meanings that a body carries. We will explore how artists use their meaningful bodies to catalyze change, focusing on social identities such as race, sexuality, gender and ability status.

This class looks at movements in performance art through weekly case studies and ask the questions, what fracture in society is this work challenging? What is the impact of the piece? And, finally, what future is it bringing to life? Artists range from household names such as Guillermo Gomez-Peña and Marina Abramowic, to performers currently studying at UM. Examples of areas of study are “human zoos” and racialized bodies on display, body art of the ACT UP movement, music of riot grrrls and campaigns addressing sexual assault on college campuses. This mini-course will be a thought-provoking, inspiring and fun survey of performance art!

Folks of all abilities, disciplines, and racial, gender, sexual and national identities welcome!

Course Requirements:

The workload will take the form of bi-weekly responses, engagement with case studies, and a final project involving planning (not necessarily performing) a potential piece of performance art.
