What does it mean to live as an outsider, to bear a "disqualified" identity? What are the forces that create outsiders and how do they operate? This course will examine writing by and about individuals who have been labelled as “outsiders” due to their gender, race, sexual orientation, class, and/or ability, as well as the social and cultural forces that maintain these inequalities. Our course readings will focus on short stories, novels, and essays from twentieth-century American authors. We will explore the ways in which these texts address such questions as: How is gender identity enforced and internalized? How do cultural assumptions about race affect how one is perceived? How do attitudes toward and representations of LGBTQ people affect members of this community? What happens when these and other disqualified identities intersect? In analyzing our course readings, we will consider the ways in which writing can reveal, critique, and resist those forces that transform certain identities into outsiders and will develop the skills necessary for creating complex, analytic, well-supported arguments in academic contexts.
