There have been a great many aspects of political conflict and violence that have been examined: onset, type, severity/lethality, duration, termination and recurrence. This concerns genocide, civil war (insurgency/counter-insurgency), terrorism, counter-terrorism, revolution, counter-revolution, state repression/human rights violation, protest and protest policing. A topic that has been largely neglected is that concerning consequences/outcomes/legacies. This course will discuss the theories, data, analyses and insights that this emerging line of inquiry has revealed. Students will also contribute to this area by engaging in original research.
