In this 8-week course, Detroiters Speak, students will learn about the city’s history and culture from its people. The Winter 2020 series will focus on the historical and contemporary intersections between movement-building and electoral politics in Detroit, as well as at the state and national levels. The class will meet in collaboration with Wayne State University's Detroit Equity Action Lab, a project of the Law School's Damon Keith Center for Civil Rights.
A free university shuttle will bring students to the Cass Corridor Commons in Detroit, where they will attend public discussions with Detroiters moderated by University of Michigan and Wayne State University staff and faculty. Each week, brief required readings from newspapers and other sources will provide students with an introduction to each topic, so they may post thoughtful questions for moderators and guests to consider.
Course sessions will be from 7-9pm at the Cass Corridor Commons in Detroit (4605 Cass Ave.).
Dates will be: February 6, 13, 20, 27, March 19 and 26, and April 2 and 9.
