This course is divided into five units. We will study how millions of women and men practice yoga today – as a health system, lifestyle, science, sport, and philosophy. We will also consider the life of B.K.S. Iyengar (1918-2014). He was instrumental in popularizing postural yoga worldwide and in deepening and articulating its relationship to the plastic and performing arts. We will acquire basic familiarity with a corpus of Sanskrit texts that informed the development of yoga philosophy and practice in ancient India. We will scrutinize technologies developed and used by early medieval practitioners.
