This course looks at the last three centuries of European history, a period shaped by political revolutions, world wars, and economic and social developments that were themselves revolutionary. We will also look at cultural phenomena such as the novel and the invention of photography, and what they meant for how Europeans thought about themselves and the world around them. For history is more than the record of events. It is also a record of the changing human consciousness.
