Description

This interdisciplinary course introduces students to the academic study of sexuality and gender through scholarship in lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer+(LGBTQ+) studies. Topics include feminine, masculine, gender-queer, and transgender positions; practices of sexuality and gender in and outside the Americas; meanings and uses of the term queer in contemporary discourse; regulation of bodies and pleasures through genital normativity and the category of sexuality itself; shifting historical concepts of same-sex desires and practices; and possibilities for activism. Throughout, the course will consider the interplay of past and present genders and sexualities with race, culture, and class.

Intended Audience:

students interested in the topic.

Class Format:

This course will include both synchronous and asynchronous elements, but students are expected to attend lecture and section via zoom at their scheduled times.
