In addition to providing the linguistic tools needed to communicate effectively, the course will develop cultural competency and focus on differences between France (and some regions of Switzerland and Quebec) and the US, such as the organization of the school/academic systems (études primaires, secondaires, supérieures), teaching methodologies, programs, and government, the place of education in society, the roles of politics and religion in education (laïcité in France).

Assignments: readings and videos; vocabulary, grammar; writings and discussions; cultural activities; exchanges with French students.

Class Format:

Fall 2021: This course will be a mixture of in-person and remote/Zoom interactions, collaborations, discussions and small-group activities. Students are expected to be available during all scheduled class times, in both settings.
