This course counts toward the 60 credits of math/science required for a Bachelor of Science degree.
May not be repeated for credit.
Primary Instructor:


The course focuses on the concepts of health and disease and their impact on society. It also focuses on the impacts of the structures and attitudes of society on health and disease. We will examine a number of health crises, especially AIDS, from the multiple viewpoints of science, medicine, public health, law, social prejudices, and the historical effects of health and disease.

Topics will include discussions of Typhoid Mary, cholera, tuberculosis, influenza, smallpox, measles, the anti-vaccine debate, the black death, polio, yellow fever and its impact on U.S. history, polio, malaria, HIV/AIDS and, of course, Covid-19. Topics will also include simplified introductions to the bacterial world, the viral world, and the human immune response.

Intended Audience:

This course is designed for non-science concentrators with little or no background in the sciences.

Class Format:

The course consists of two 90-minute lectures per week.
