Description

Genetics is at the core of biology and medicine. In this course, you will learn the basics of Mendelian and non-Mendelian inheritance at the levels of molecules, single organisms and populations. We will cover classical genetics, population genetics, the nature of chromosomal mutations, the molecular genetics of DNA replication, recombination, repair, transcription, and translation and how the expression of genes is regulated at both the genetic and epigenetic levels. We will also touch on topics such as stem cells, therapeutic cloning, GMOs and CRISPR.

Course Requirements:

Grading is based primarily on four exams covering lectures and reading assignments; exams include problems that test applications of basic concepts and genetic techniques. Required discussion sections are designed to reinforce concepts in genetics using in-class problem-solving sessions and other activities.

Intended Audience:

All students of biology and pre-health sciences.

Class Format:

There are three hours of lecture each week and one 90-minute discussion session, directed by Graduate Student Instructors. The discussion sections expand on lecture material through problem-solving activities and in-depth discussion.
