Description

“History, despite its wrenching pain, cannot be unlived, however, if faced with courage, need not be lived again.” -Maya Angelou

“We learn from history that we don’t learn from history!” -Desmond Tutu

What happened in France in the 1940’s during the German Occupation? How did this tumultuous time shape French identity and politics and what comparisons can we make with the present? In this course, we will examine life in France during World War II, the experiences of individuals from various groups (refugees, members of the Resistance, etc. ) living in France and in the French colonies and the choices they made. After acquiring a deeper understanding of this period, we will make comparisons with recent events. What lessons can we take from that period of history to better understand the rise in nationalism in several countries around the world? What correlations can we make with reactions to world events like the Covid pandemic?

Course Requirements:

Students will read excerpts, short stories, poems and analyze various pieces of propaganda. We will also view video and film excerpts as well as a few full length films. Requirements include class preparation (and active participation in class discussions), an oral presentation, short writing assignments, and a final video project. Taught entirely in French with an emphasis on collaboration, group work and class discussions.
