American Culture 305 is an upper-level three-credit course on Asian/Pacific Islander American and Arab/Muslim American social activism and related political and legal issues. The course is based upon direct student engagement with community organizations and/or agencies. A single 80-minute meeting takes place each week to cover fundamentals for operation of a community agency. The class works in conjunction with independent placements and assignments in relevant internships in those community organizations and/or agencies.
Students will gain an understanding in the operational detail of an Asian/Pacific Islander American or Arab/Muslim American community organization. Students will learn about the importance of grass roots service organizations as they impact the community. Students will develop collaboration skills working with staff and clients in the field. Students will improve their communication skills through class discussion, field reports, and presentations.
