The goal of this seminar is to introduce students both to literary analysis and to significant aspects of German modernism. We will read short stories, poems, novels and (a few) philosophical essays written between 1880 and 1930. Issues to be discussed include: urban experience; humans and animals; the representation of consciousness; gender and power; science and literature. Authors include: Kafka, Hofmansthal, Rilke, Freud, Fleißer, Schnitzler, Benn, Döblin, and Brecht. Taught in German.
