Introduction to Music and Audio Production: Creative Resources as a U-M Student
This course is for students who are interested in developing contextually-informed artistic practices geared toward music performance, writing, production, and post-production. A simultaneous goal is for students to learn how to manage resources that can be found on and off-campus to pursue creative processes and develop personal skills during their time as students and independent creatives. Through a series of composition exercises and written assignments, students build skills in sequencing, audio or MIDI recording and editing, mixing, sound synthesis, as well as creative study techniques and personal growth practices as a student, creative, and individual. At the end of this course, students should feel comfortable with the necessary skills to personally create music that represents them. This will require a critical ear to the world of music and sound that surrounds you, an understanding of the potential that exists in the medium, knowledge of creative resources that are available to students, and a thoughtful consideration of how to execute individual intent by exploring different creative and personal processes such as journaling, constraint attempts, experimentation and feedback, incubation, and more.
