In Lemonade, Beyoncé samples a speech by Malcolm X declaring, “The most disrespected person in America is the black woman…The most neglected person in America is the black woman.” In this lecture course, we make visible black women’s struggles by telling the story of their lives in the United States during the 20th and 21st Century. Often, black women are absent from histories of the United States. Centering black women and girls’ experiences, this course explores significant events, organizations, and political debates that helped to transform the civil rights, black power, and women's movements. Over the course of the semester, students will work on biography projects that focus on public history and public memory.
