This course is an introduction to understanding the psychology of people of African descent using Black and African-centered (Afrocentric) liberatory conceptual models. Topics that will be covered in the course include the philosophical underpinnings of Black/African-centered psychology, the psychological impact of enslavement, racial identity and personality development, gender and intersectionality, education and achievement, aggression, violence, crime, mental health, and the psychological impact of hip hop.
There will be 3 two page reaction papers, 6 pop quizzes, a 2 page personal growth paper, and 1 group final exam. The class is a combination of lecture and discussion. Class costs for texts are under $50.
