This course is a critical exploration of the sociological literature on race relations. We will be concerned with the most salient institutions and outcomes analyzed by race and ethnicity theorists, including assimilation, identity, immigration, residential segregation, wealth inequality, educational attainment, labor market participation, and crime. We will also consider how cultural factors shape and are influenced by race/ethnic relations. Students can expect to emerge from the course with substantive knowledge about the interplay of race and culture.
