Description

From the Harlem Renaissance poems of Langston Hughes to the 21st century rhymes of rapper Kendrick Lamar, African American cultural production has been deeply invested in chronicling urban experiences in the United States. Through a close examination of popular culture, this class will think about the historical trajectory of urban and racial identity—particularly for young people—in depictions of city life. Some of the questions we will consider in this course: What is African American popular culture? How has it contributed to the creation of the modern U.S. city? How does city life impact identity formation? How does the performance of identity impact the city itself? How can we study the icons and narratives of urban cultural production—from Blaxploitation film to spoken word to hip hop—to think about urban communities?
