Description

This first-year seminar introduces students to the multiple and varied roles Latinxs have played in U.S. civil rights movements and global freedom struggles. It also introduces students to key themes in comparative ethnic studies and solidarity literature. We will explore a variety of Latinx freedom dreams including the formation of ethnic studies and other student protest movements; civil rights and third world solidarities; farm workers, labor rights, and immigration; and struggles against gentrification and police violence. Together, we will transform our classroom into a space not only to read and critique how scholars have written about Latinx freedom dreams, but also into a space to practice building community at U-M.

Intended Audience:

First-year students
