Description

This course explores representations of Muslims and Black people in film and TV. We will watch several old and new television shows, music videos and films to examine stereotypes, such as the Black “emcee/rapper” and the Muslim “terrorist,” and the roles these stereotypes play in shaping what the US public thinks it “knows” about Black people and about Muslims. In this course, students are introduced to important concepts of popular culture and the skills to interpret music, film, and television so they learn to look critically at the relationship between race, religion, and popular culture. Students will also share what they learn and their own points of view by creating short video mashups or IG reels about representation for the public.
