This course introduces key thinkers, texts, doctrines, practices, and objects from Japan’s 1500-year engagement with Buddhism. Students will read a wide variety of primary sources in English translation. These may include scriptures, myths, sermons, letters, polemical tracts, autobiography, and religious testimonials. Students may encounter anthropological accounts, historical studies, audio recordings, still images, and video.
Course Requirements:
Short writing assignments due before every course meeting; two or three presentations of material by each student; substantial research and writing assignments at midterm and the end of the semester
Intended Audience:
Upper-level undergraduates. Prior knowledge of or experience with Japanese language, culture, or history are not required.
Class Format:
Two 90-minute meetings weekly
