In this course we will examine the power of dialogue and its ability to illustrate plot, character, voice, and theme. We will explore effective ways to achieve realistic dialogue and replicate human behavior while telling an engaging story that moves. Mediums used in this course will include short stories, plays, podcasts, screenplays, and film. The instructor will provide all needed texts, which will include works from Jamaica Kincaid, Annie Baker, ZZ Packer, Donald Barthelme, Melissa Mogollon, and more.
This course does not fulfill any English major/minor requirements. This course is an elective for English majors and minors.
Course Requirements:
This course requires regular participation in lectures, discussions, and writing workshops. There will be 1-2 short quizzes during the semester as well as a weekly 1-2 page assignment based off of the required reading. Students will write short responses to their peers workshop submitted texts. Students will write one 7-8 page short story that will be workshopped by the class towards the end of the semester. There is no mid-term and no final exam.
Intended Audience:
This course is accessible and welcome to all undergraduate students at all levels, including those majoring in the humanities as well as non-humanities majors. Students interested in literature, theater, film, and storytelling above all else, are encouraged to take this class.
