This course explores the dynamics of race, gender, and disability in American superhero movies since 2000, with particular (though not sole) emphasis on the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Superhero movies are among the most watched and highest grossing feature films in the world, but, like most media, they hardly equally or fairly represent the diverse populations of its viewers, despite some pressure to adapt from fans and activists. Our objective in this course is to critically analyze representation and ideology in superhero movies for historical research, and understand the cultural and industrial contexts that shape them. Together we will explore how changing ideas and norms about identity in American society influenced (or were influenced by) the depiction of “ideal” heroes of different races, gender identities, and who are differently abled, physically and/or mentally.
