No previous background in Roman history is required for this course. After a brief look at pre-Roman Italy, we will survey the political and social history of the Roman Republic from the late sixth century BCE through the death of Antonius in 31. Lectures and reading assignments will draw on a range of evidence, including ancient literature, inscriptions, and archaeological material. Special attention will be paid to questions of the reliability of our sources, both in terms of their factual accuracy and the biases of the authors, the basic institutions and customs of the Roman Republic, the causes of Rome's expansion, and the reasons for the Republic's collapse.
