This course traces the political, social, and economic history of Turkey from the establishment of the Turkish Republic in 1923 to the present. Starting with a review of reform movements in the late Ottoman Empire, we will proceed chronologically and explore major themes such as nationalism, state violence, religion and secularism, the role of the Turkish military, and political polarization.
Course Requirements:
Attendance and participation (20%), two short writing assignments (3 pages each) (20%), midterm (30%), final (30%)
