The general framework for this course is the intersection of capitalism with colonialism. This course surveys three periods of this intersection: the modern colonial period, decolonization and the rise of neo-colonialism, and finally, globalization. The focus of this course is to understand how the capitalist political economy of colonialism has changed over time, and how these changes constitute and have been constituted by different racial, ethnic, caste and national identities of the colonized in the Global South. Special attention will therefore be paid to anti-colonial critique, post-colonial scholarship, and the contours of global inequality.
